Cheers to 40 years! Dock Street’s Anniversary Celebration
Philadelphia’s first craft brewery. Woman & independently owned. Established 1985.
A word from our founder, Rosemarie Certo:
When we began brewing 40 years ago there was no such thing as good full bodied, American beer – you had to buy an imported beer if you wanted to drink a fully developed or innovative style beer. But why couldn’t Americans make rich, innovative, hand crafted, full-bodied American beers?
Certo said that many people thought the microbrewery concept would not work – but she and other microbrew pioneers proved them wrong. Collectively, the pioneers helped change the face of the American brewing industry and American beer drinking culture. “Our Dock Street beers are now sold to the children of the parents who were a part of the pioneering efforts that changed the landscape of American beer drinking habits by buying high-end American craft beers. Our mantra continues to be ‘buy American, make local, buy local.’”
“It’s been a crazy, fantastical , challenging ride, but it was and still is big fun, said Certo. “This is my calling. This is my legacy, and if I could go back and do it all again, I wouldn’t change a thing. CHEERS!”
Our name, Dock Street, was chosen in honor of the seaport district which was, in the late 1700's, the largest producer of beer in the then-newly-formed country. Today, we still brew with the spirit of Philadelphia's sudsy history, and Dock St. (right, in 1908) in mind.
